Town & Country Lodging
Just a short drive from the well known and popular World Heritage Sites of Lednice and Valtice, is the relatively quiet historic castle town of Mikulov. On the street named goose, in a town where the locals cook many geese to celebrate the new wine and the coming of winter, is a house also named goose. It is one of the most remarkable surprises we have found in all the Czech Lands, this Penzion named Husa.
First, it is important to say a little bit about the owner. One of the truly remarkable personalities to have come from this region, and there are several, Mr. Chmelar and his wife returned to this sad boarder town after the so called Velvet Revolution. In the aftermath, their love for gardening (botany) and travel, led them to reconstruct a house for their own purposes, on the occasion of their frequent visits to this place they love. They were also among the founders of the well known Greenways Regional Development Project. This is an extraordinary series of paths and bicycle trails connecting Vienna to Prague.
Furthermore, about Mikulov, not enough attention is given to this picturesque castle town, in the heart of the wine growing region of the same name. It is full of superlatives, not the least which is it's rich Jewish heritage, the viticulture, and its rich history as the palace and final resting place of the Dietrichstein family. It is easy to keep occupied by the many different galleries, cafes, museums and cellars for a whole week. At the very least, we like to recommend Mikulov as a stop over, on the way to Vienna, Bratislava, or Budapest.
For those with enough time to stay over, the Penzion Husa will surely be a thrill. Not a hotel, but far more like a Bed & Breakfast. The only difference, is that you are your own chef. For travelers who have dietary concerns, and are not comfortable constantly eating out, this home away from home has all the necessary amenities to satisfy your needs.
There are two houses, across a quiet street from one another. In the main house every room is tastefully decorated and pleasant to stay in. Most rooms have private baths and toilet, with one room's shower and toilet in the hall. There is an elegant austerity to the owner's choice of furnishing and decoration. The second house also has a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living room, and dining area. Together, there is sufficient space for up to 20 persons, or as few as 1.
In any event, you will not regret staying at the Penzion Husa for a night. More than likely, you will want to stay longer. This is the ideal place for a long weekend with children, a honeymoon, or anniversary. It is both romantic and cozy.
